What ND-affirming support is and why it matters

Why do language and mindset matter?

When I first began working with families navigating ADHD and other neurodivergent profiles, I kept seeing the same pattern:
Too many support systems focused on "fixing" children, rather than understanding and supporting them.

That’s why neurodiversity-affirming support matters so much. It shifts the focus.
It recognises that different ways of thinking, feeling, and being are natural variations - not problems to correct.

When we affirm neurodiversity, we show children (and ourselves) that every mind deserves respect, compassion, and tailored support - not judgment.

What does neurodiversity-affirming support look like in everyday life?

Neurodiversity-affirming support isn’t a specific therapy or programme. It’s a mindset that shapes how we:

Speak about challenges and strengths

Set up learning, home, or care environments

Respond to emotional needs

Celebrate differences

Here are some ways I see it in action every day:

Using person-first, strengths-based language (for example, "a child with ADHD" instead of "an ADHD child")

Focusing on adapting environments rather than forcing children to change who they are

Providing choices and flexibility instead of rigid rules

Celebrating a child’s individual learning style, even if it looks different from the norm

Building emotional skills over time without expecting "perfect behaviour"

Why does it matter for families and children?

Choosing a neurodiversity-affirming approach changes the story we tell children about themselves.
It says:

"You are not broken."

"You have valuable strengths."

"You deserve support that fits you."

"You can thrive on your own terms."

Research shows that children who experience affirming support have stronger self-esteem, fewer mental health struggles, and better long-term outcomes.

For families, it builds resilience, strengthens relationships, and reduces the pressure to "make everything normal."
Instead, we create space to celebrate what makes each journey uniquely brilliant.

How is twigged here to help?

The twigged toolkit for ADHD is designed with a fully neurodiversity-affirming mindset.

Every tool, strategy, and guide is built by me to adapt to your child - not the other way around.

The founder

I started twigged out of both personal urgency and professional insight.
As The Toolkit Therapist and parent to a neurodivergent child, I experienced first hand the overwhelm and isolation families often face after a diagnosis.
Frustrated by the lack of practical, empathetic support, I set out to create what I couldn’t find: simple, evidence-based tools that make everyday life easier.
